In 1972, the first Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch was born. It is made of stainless steel, fixed by exposed hexagonal screws on the octagonal bezel, with an integrated stainless steel strap, and an ultra-thin self-winding movement. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500 was launched in 2019 to replace the previous ref. 15400. The date window at 3 o’clock is now much closer to the bezel, the hour markers have had their length reduced but are now thicker, the ‘Automatic’ inscription has been removed, and the minute track is now printed on a ring on the outer edge of the “Grande Tapisserie” dial. All these changes have the visual effect of making the dial cleaner and larger. Moreover, while the flagship Royal Oak models are made from more traditional materials, like stainless steel and rose gold, many of the Royal Oak Concept models, including the Concept GMT Tourbillon and Concept Carbone, are constructed from more unusual materials, like ceramic, titanium and carbon.
