In 1972, the first Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch was born. It is made of stainless steel, fixed by exposed hexagonal screws on the octagonal bezel, with an integrated stainless steel strap, and an ultra-thin self-winding movement. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500 was launched in 2019 to replace the previous ref. 15400. The date window at 3 o’clock is now much closer to the bezel, the hour markers have had their length reduced but are now thicker, the ‘Automatic’ inscription has been removed, and the minute track is now printed on a ring on the outer edge of the “Grande Tapisserie” dial. All these changes have the visual effect of making the dial cleaner and larger.
On the wrist, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak replica watches wears large and that feeling is further reinforced by the space available on the dial. Some might say that such a generous dial creates a visual imbalance but I think it just draws you more into the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern and you can find yourself staring at it for long periods of time depending on how the light hits the dial.

Debuted in 1972, designed by G??rald Genta, the stainless octagonal watch costing as much or more than a gold dress watch defined a whole new category, the so-called luxury sports watch with integrated bracelet. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak clone collection will have to wait 1998 for a chronograph complocation to be added, in a 39mm case. Back then, it was fitted with a Fr??d??ric Piguet automatic column-wheel chronograph movement with date. As fashions change, so do watch sizes, and the original 39mm Royal Oak Chronograph was replaced with the 41mm model in 2012.
